Ontario Line station neighbourhoods

The LRA participated in the Gerrard–Carlaw South and Eastern Avenue Transit-Oriented Communities Local Advisory Committee, represented by Blair Scorgie. The committee provided a forum for bringing community priorities into engagement with Infrastructure Ontario.

Through this work, Blair advocated for affordable replacement space for existing employment uses, retention of significant architectural and cultural elements, and the reintroduction of arts and cultural spaces lost to redevelopment.

Homes, places to work and room for culture

At Gerrard–Carlaw South, these priorities include spaces that businesses and creative organizations can actually use and afford. Usable layouts, occupancy costs, suitable operators and lasting arrangements matter alongside the amount of space proposed. Building on Crow’s Theatre offers an opportunity to strengthen the area’s arts and cultural life.

Housing affordability also needs clear delivery commitments: whom the homes serve, how affordability is funded, who operates them and how long it lasts. These are objectives we advocate for; participation in the committee does not mean that every benefit has been secured.

Connecting the station to the wider neighbourhood

Construction and the transition to new development also matter. We advocate for safe access to homes, businesses and community destinations during construction, infrastructure and services available when needed, and practical interim arrangements where permanent improvements will take longer.

Station entrances, streets, public spaces and community uses need to work together across adjoining sites. Our neighbourhood mapping provides a broader context for considering transit connections and development, alongside safe walking and cycling routes and the everyday services people depend on.

As proposals move forward, residents should be able to see which benefits are proposed, which commitments are secured, who is responsible and how delivery will be tracked.
